Fencing Installation – Solar Farm in Fife

Objective

A Solar Plant appointed Logan Bruce to deliver the complete fencing installation package for the plant — a 30.07 MWp solar energy facility located in the heart of Fife, Scotland. The scope encompasses the design, supply, and installation of a permanent perimeter deer fence and a temporary Health & Safety (H&S) fence across four land plots with a combined perimeter exceeding 5,958 metres and a total site area of 386,270 m².

The fencing works form a critical enabling package within the wider solar development, required to secure the site perimeter ahead of the main solar installation programme whilst simultaneously protecting construction personnel from high-voltage infrastructure present within the plant boundary. Works are ongoing and are scheduled for completion in July 2026.

Permanent Perimeter Deer Fence

Logan Bruce is constructing a permanent deer fencing installation designed to a 30-year service life across all four plots. Key construction details include:

  • Maximum fence height of 2.0 metres using creosote-treated timber posts
  • Strainer posts at maximum 5-metre spacing at all direction changes, start and end points
  • Mesh specification HT13/190/15: 150 × 150 mm box apertures, galvanised wire, minimum tensile strength 400 MPa
  • Mesh tensioned at every post position to maintain a consistent, taut profile across varying gradients
  • 100 mm ground clearance maintained beneath mesh to limit moisture degradation whilst preventing small mammal ingress
  • At-grade mammal gates (20 × 20 cm) at 150-metre intervals to preserve local fauna permeability
  • Ten galvanised steel vehicle access gates, each with a 5.0-metre clear opening, fitted with mechanical-interlocking locks, handles, and ground bolts
  • All metalwork galvanised after welding to ensure a continuous, corrosion-free protective finish

 

All materials and methodology comply with British Standard BS 1722 — Fences. The site’s classification as a C3 corrosive ambient environment drove the selection of fully galvanised steelwork throughout.

Temporary Health & Safety Fencing Installation

Running to approximately 2,900 metres, the temporary H&S fencing system is installed within the plant boundary to segregate multiple high-voltage electrical lines during the construction phase. The system:

  • Establishes clearly defined exclusion zones around live electrical infrastructure
  • Complies with applicable Health & Safety regulations for work in proximity to energised equipment
  • Is designed for straightforward removal upon project completion, leaving no permanent ground fixings or residual infrastructure

Challenges

Site & Ground Conditions

  • Wet ground conditions during the March 2026 installation phase required careful management of plant movement across agricultural land to minimise ground disturbance and avoid damage to farmland.

 

  • Highly variable plot sizes — ranging from Plot 1 at 24,067 m² (679 m perimeter) to Plot 2 at 167,854 m² (1,914 m perimeter) — demanded distinct resourcing and sequencing plans for each area.

 

  • Undulating gradients across the site required precise post positioning and mesh tensioning to maintain a consistent fence profile without gaps or sag.

Environmental & Ecological Requirements

  • Rural location adjacent to woodland and open farmland created a significant deer ingress risk, requiring a robust, high-tensile mesh solution rather than standard stock fencing.

 

  • Biodiversity net gain obligations required the integration of wildlife crossing features (mammal gates) without compromising the deer-exclusion function of the primary fence.

 

  • C3 corrosive ambient classification driven by the coastal-influenced Scottish climate necessitated fully galvanised material specifications throughout.

Programme & Safety Complexity

  • The fencing installation package was a critical enabling works item — delays would have directly impacted the solar panel installation programme and the wider project schedule.

 

  • Concurrent construction of permanent and temporary fencing systems across four discrete plots required close coordination to avoid conflicts and optimise workforce deployment.

 

  • Proximity to live high-voltage infrastructure within the plant boundary demanded strict safety segregation and compliance with electrical exclusion zone requirements throughout the works.

Solution

Ground & Plant Management

Logan Bruce implemented a controlled plant movement strategy, routing machinery along designated access corridors to limit ground disturbance on agricultural land during the wet March 2026 conditions. Temporary trackway was deployed at key crossing points to protect the ground surface and maintain safe access for excavator-mounted post drivers throughout the installation phase.

Technical Specification & Standards Compliance

The permanent deer fence was specified and constructed to BS 1722, with HT13/190/15 high-tensile galvanised mesh selected to meet both the structural demands of the terrain and the C3 corrosion environment. No cantilever, overhang, or barbed wire elements were incorporated, in keeping with the client’s specification and environmental best practice. Post and strainer positions were surveyed and set out to accommodate gradient changes, ensuring consistent mesh tension across the full 5,958-metre perimeter.

Biodiversity Integration

Mammal gates (20 × 20 cm) were integrated into the fence line at 150-metre intervals, allowing smaller native mammals to move freely through the site boundary. This approach satisfied the projects biodiversity net gain commitments without any compromise to the primary deer-exclusion function, and was coordinated with the project ecologist prior to installation.

Safety Management

The temporary H&S fencing system was designed and installed in strict compliance with applicable Health & Safety regulations, establishing clearly defined exclusion zones around all live electrical infrastructure within the plant. The safety management framework governed the interface between Logan Bruce’s fencing operatives and other contractors working in proximity to energised equipment, with exclusion zones maintained and monitored throughout the construction programme.

Programme Coordination

Works across the four plots were sequenced to prioritise the largest perimeter areas, enabling the solar installation contractor to take early possession of secured zones. Regular programme reviews ensured resource levels were adjusted as ground conditions evolved and construction activity on adjacent packages progressed.

Benefits

The fencing installation commenced in March 2026 and are progressing on schedule for completion in July 2026. Interim outcomes to date include:

The project demonstrates Logan Bruce’s capability to deliver technically complex civil scopes on large-scale renewable energy developments to programme.
